Decorator of the Month
Sam Collett Southey
It's not every day that you meet someone who always knew they'd go into interior design. For Sam Collett Southey of The Chalk Studio that was truly the case. We get talking to find out what inspires her and also get some helpful tips on decor.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
We grew up with a mother who was constantly moving furniture around – and I do mean constantly! So I suppose interior design was in my blood. There was never any doubt about what I wanted to do with my life; I just knew this was the career for me and I made it happen. Fortunately, I haven’t had any regrets. My mom is 70 now and still driving everyone mad moving furniture around, the only difference is now we do it together.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
I’m inspired by colourful, eclectic spaces that aren’t contrived. Anything that has a story and a history is always a recipe for a beautiful interior.
Q
Tell us about your latest project.
A
My latest project is for a family who bought an old house in Bryanston on a very large stand. They demolished the house and built their dream home set in the most magnificent gardens. It was a blank space that we filled with outrageous colours and bold, oversized furniture. It took a lot of trust but to their credit, they let me run with my crazy ideas and together we have transformed their home into an interesting and welcoming interior.
Q
What advice do you have for our clients if they wish to redecorate?
A
Before making any rash decisions, call a professional in for a consultation. Sometimes a fresh eye makes all the difference. Moving existing furniture and spaces around can easily transform a home. Reuse quality pieces and build up from there. Do what you love and don’t doubt yourself – perfect interiors are often soulless.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
That's a tough one, but I would have to say the two large George Smith sofas I made for my husband before we were married. Never underestimate the value of a quality, custom-made sofa. I've just recovered them for the third time in jewel-coloured velvets and they look brand new. My family lives on those sofas!
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
I am loving the vibrant patchwork rugs and the Bengal tiger cushion and wall hanging collection. What a fabulous and easy way to add interest to a space.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Prioritise! If you have a limited budget focus on one space at a time. Invest in quality furniture and fabrics and make one room beautiful at a time. Don’t try and spread a limited budget across multiple rooms, you’ll only land up disappointed with the result.
