Tessa's lifelong fascination with beautiful homes
Tessa Proudfoot
It takes talent and time to create an interior space that is simultaneously welcoming and artful. That’s why we love to celebrate top decorators across South Africa through our Decorator of the Month series. For September we speak to interior expert Tessa Proudfoot on how she likes to see local design shine and find out more about her current projects.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
I have had a lifelong fascination with beautiful homes and interiors. Even as a toddler I loved paging through books and magazines on architecture and gardens, dreaming about living inside them! There was never any question as to what my career would be. I am so blessed to do what I love every day of my life.
Q
Do you have a specific style, what inspires you?
A
I try not to have a specific style as each project has its unique requirements so the challenge is to try and get inside the head of each client and interpret their dreams and aspirations to create a completely customised interior. However, my preference in terms of style leans towards an eclectic mix of styles and periods with plenty of contrasts in textures and proportions so as to create sumptuous beautiful spaces that invite comfort and harmony.
Q
What advice do you have for our clients if they wish to redecorate?
A
Rather complete one area beautifully than spread your budget thinly over your whole house… Even if it's only a beautiful sofa and two chairs.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
My collection of blue Chinese ginger jars.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at
Block & Chisel?
A
The Burgundy Armoire is an all time favourite of mine. Painted black it is ideal in a contemporary space, but left natural it works beautifully in a traditional interior. The Ursula Occasional Chair and the Quincy leather chairs are also gorgeous.
Q
Share with us your simplest décor tip.
A
The quickest and simplest way to add a 'touch of décor' to a space is to set up a drinks tray; a big tray, silver or otherwise, set up with some pretty glasses, a water jug, some decanters of freshly squeezed juices. Or better still a selection of gin, vodka and whisky along with some mini San Pellegrino waters or your choice of mixers. Add some candles and an ice bucket and voila, it's party time!
