Kelly Adami
Kelly Adami of Copperleaf Studio aims to bring her client's design visions to life by finding the balance between creativity and problem-solving. Her work has graced the pages of several glossy interior and home magazines and continues to inspire decor lovers all over South Africa. We caught up with her to find out what makes her tick.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
I've always had an appreciation for beautiful things and a creative energy. As a profession, interior design is a lovely combination of creativity, interacting with people and problem-solving. I am motivated by these elements and I enjoy the challenge of trying to get that balance right. My mother was also very definitely an influence. She was a very talented decorator and I was always intrigued with how her pin board visions came to life. It is a really gratifying process.
Q
Do you have a specific style?
A
Contemporary with a nod to history and heritage. I love the contrast between old and new and the visual energy that's created when elements from different periods are combined. Nature is another one and I use a lot of natural textures and motifs in my work. It's a way to bring the outside in. Still, the style of each project is very much guided by the client brief, and ends to take on a look and feel of their own. Our aim is to offer completely bespoke solutions.
Q
What advice do you have for our clients if they wish to redecorate?
A
Invest in hiring a professional, it will save you money in the long run.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
Without a doubt, a pair ceramic table lamps handmade by my exceptionally talented friend. They have little Lemur motifs on them. They are so unique and they bring me joy every time I look at them.
Q
Tell us about your latest project.
A
A small bespoke office space in Kramerville. We worked closely with the client to achieve a pared-back, industrial aesthetic using black steel, exposed brick, natural wood and concrete, as well as worked with existing building materials and finishes. The end result is such a calm and soothing space to work in that also has a very clear design personality. It was a really fabulous project.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
There are so many and I love that the smalls are regularly changing. I'm particularly loving the clean lines of Josie dining chair, the subtle detailing of the Greta coffee table, the proportions of the Ping 1-drawer bedside table and the Trinity nesting side tables. Clearly I have a thing for tables, and for brass detailing!
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Always keep it simple. Choose classic silhouettes that won't date and accessorise with pieces that you really love for a uniquely personal interior that simultaneously has longevity.
