Decorator of the Month April Sthombe Mere Adorn Interiors

Decorator of the Month
Sthombe Mere
Our Decorator of the Month, Sthombe Mere of Adorn Interiors, can truly say she spends her days working on what she's most passionate about: interior decor. She has worked across the country to create homes that are not just masterful interior projects, but most importantly, sanctuaries to the people who live in them. We chat to her to find out how she views her work as an interior decorator.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
I think it was the universe redirecting me to my first love: art. I did art in high school, but when in tertiary I chose a degree in communications. After 15 years working in both public and private sector, and having renovated and decorated our homes and those of friends in that time, I realised what I had been missing – and that’s how I started Adorn Interiors.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
I work with any style that the client prefers but my personal style leans more to classic and contemporary styles. I draw inspiration from different elements but fabric tops them all.
Q
Tell us about your latest project.
A
I recently finished a holiday home in Port Elizabeth for a Johannesburg-based family where I worked closely with the developer and contractors. It was a great opportunity which required a detailed project management plan since we were sourcing our elements from different cities. The result: a relaxing holiday home! I am currently working on another holiday home in Clarens, situated right at the top of a country estate with breathtaking views.
Q
What advice do you have for those of us who wish to redecorate?
A
Put together a collection of interior pictures you love and look at your existing furniture to see if they can be given new life. Start working room by room, creating a flow as you go to give your home that decorator’s touch – and keep trends to a minimum.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
My daybed without a doubt. It’s the best place for me to rest after a long day!
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
Choosing just one item is a bit difficult, but I’ll go with the Decon Occasional Chair.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Always use duck feather inners for your cushions. That "chop" in the middle of the cushion takes them to the next level!
