In the month of March, we get talking to decorator Lara Myerson. Known for her vibrant interiors, Lara brings colour, pattern and styles together in a symphony of style. Her work illustrates just how well classic furniture pieces work in contemporary spaces to create memorable, updated interiors.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
I love all things beautiful. I worked in fashion for many years in children’s wear which was fun, quirky and full of colour and pattern. After renovating my own home I found I couldn’t stop and now I feel so lucky to love what I do. My work is an extension of my life, constantly sourcing beautiful things, always creating and styling.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
I would say my style is contemporary and organic. I have an obsession with all things green, inspired by many years living in the “garden city” of Singapore. On any given day I derive inspiration from something different, but travel is most definitely top of the list.
Q
Tell us about a recent project you've completed.
A
One of my recent favourites was designing an industrial office space. The thing I most love about offices is that you can incorporate all your ideas in one space. Every room had a surprise element, from crazy geometrics to a Mandela installation. I’m also working on a fantastic apartment that is only gold and white, which is a challenge for me and a shift from all things organic.
Q
What advice do you have for those of us who wish to redecorate?
A
I would always encourage clients not to ignore the small spaces such as powder rooms, landings and entrances. All these small spaces are a chance to be creative and add something quirky or whimsical. You also have only one chance to create a first impression, so make sure your entrance has that wow factor when you walk in.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
The gorgeous oil painting of cascading apples that hangs above my fireplace. It is a Korean artist and an anniversary gift from my husband. My other prized possessions are my children’s cards that are plastered on the inside of every cupboard in my home!
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
The Cambridge Sofa. It’s a classic and I do love anything deep-buttoned and velvet.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
First and foremost, incorporate sentimental elements. This makes a home authentic and reflects your true personality. Introduce the simple elements of greenery. The trend now with cascading greenery and succulents of all types and colour is so easy to play with, cost effective and breathes life into a space.
