Decorator of the Month
Zeanne Duminy
Trained as an architect and an artist at heart, interior decorator Zeanne Duminy knows that good interiors need to reflect her client's own personality, while also offering them inspiration. She shares her fresh approach to interiors with us in the month of September.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
I am a trained architect, and I still practice architecture. I realised, though, that interiors are an inspiring and natural progression of a successful space. When interiors continue and complement the architecture of a space you can achieve a holistic and very inspiring result. For this reason, I try to understand and incorporate an offering of interiors for my clients. I have not looked back.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
Yes, I do not know if it is a style but If I could make it a style, then it would be “travelled”. I am inspired by the layering of process, of creating a space that is warm and robust, but clean too. This is created through textures and pieces that are both bought and collected, antiques and new. I would call this style, an eclectic one. Travel is a vital element to design and helps me articulate, understand and indeed, inspire design!
Q
Tell us about your latest project.
A
We are working on some development projects where both the architecture and the interiors are important to the developer who understands this holistic approach. I have a beautiful “old dame” of a house too which we have just finished gutting and refurbishing, she is now clean and fresh and has been given a bit of a “facelift”, with her “new look”. We are now on the lookout for the pieces to complement and fill her! This is so exciting.
Q
What advice do you have for our clients if they wish to redecorate?
A
Look into the use of a professional, even if it is only on a consultation basis. There are so many incredible local designers, architects and interior specialists who will not only help you spend your budget wisely and perhaps help to avoid expensive mistakes, but so too, help bring things together. Next, only buy what you love. Your home needs to be a reflection of you, your family and how you live. Lastly, have fun, move things around and be bold!
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
Bar chairs I bought on auction, which I won by unknowingly by bidding against my father (who knew I wanted them), and an old display cabinet, previously used to display my grandmother’s china, is repurposed to display my shoes. The art that my husband and I have viewed, discussed, saved for and collected together, a cot my father made. Investing in quality furniture is so important, as these pieces become a part of your home, witnessing your milestones and will be passed on to later generations.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at
Block & Chisel?
A
I have so many! Of course, I love all the jewel-toned, velvet-upholstered sofas. I love the black finish and storage opportunities of the Curtis display cabinet and the gold details of the Pharoah side table and Mullins mirror. The Palmer hanging light is fresh and fun.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Never be afraid. Your home and space is yours, it should be an extension of who you are, as well as inspire you!
