Elisha Annandale talks interiors and inspiration

Decorator of the Month - July
Elisha Annandale
Elisha Annandale founded her interior decor company Decor Identity to offer a turnkey service in interiors in Johannesburg. Several years later, she and her team have worked with a variety of different clients, from those requiring small updates to full interior consultations of brand new buildings. We get talking to learn what inspires her.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
My passion has always come from wanting to make things beautiful. Working with beautiful spaces, and using stunning materials, accessories etc., to create a space that you feel proud of at the end is what really drives me. The most satisfying part for me is the end result and knowing and seeing that your client loves the space you created.
Q
Do you have a specific style?
A
I wouldn't say I have any specific style. Instead, I like to work to answer my clients’ specific needs and their requirements.
Q
Tell us about your latest project.
A
I am working with the architect and contractor from plan, and we do the space planning, electrical layouts, plumbing layouts and so on. We assist the client with the whole building process in choosing the kitchen design, bathroom designs, tiles, paint, etc. We just completed a project of a 1500sqm home building and decorating.
Q
What advice do you have for those of us who wish to redecorate?
A
Start with painting your walls. It makes the biggest difference and won’t cost you too much. Then work with what you have, recovering existing furniture pieces or painting old wooden pieces to give them a modern look. Then replace your old rug and scatter cushions. Lastly bring in fresh plants to really give a fresh look to any space.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
It’s difficult for me to choose only one piece as I have so many things I value such as pieces from my mother that I really love in my home. I would say that I do love the small accessories and vases that my kids buy me for birthdays etc.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
The vintage black and white rugs are a favourite of mine, as they can be used on a covered patio or inside. They are just so versatile and work with so many different spaces and colour schemes.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Take any old piece of furniture and repaint it to give it a lift and make a space feel modern and new. Introduce new scatters and accessories and you will transform a space from dull to fresh and modern.
